Info

Why can’t I throw all items away in the trash bin?

Items thrown away in the trash go to landfills where they take up space, break down extremely slowly, and emit greenhouse gases. There are often more environmentally friendly and economically efficient ways to dispose of waste. Recyclables can be remade into new items, helping to conserve raw materials. Organic waste goes to composting facilities where it is turned into fresh soil. Household hazardous waste items cannot be thrown in the trash because they are harmful and require special disposal techniques.

Why do certain items need to be disposed of at an HHW drop off location?

Some items contain toxic chemicals and can still potentially harm humans, animals, and plants after being thrown away. Disposing these items at an HHW drop off location instead of throwing them in the trash ensures that they are handled properly instead of going into landfills where the harmful chemicals can leach into surrounding soil and water.

When in doubt, call your trash company to see where the item goes.

Stop Waste Before It Starts!

When you’re making your next purchase, pay attention to what packaging you’re buying and opt for items with little or no packaging or items with reusable packaging whenever possible.
